Check for Quartz Extreme and Core Image support in System Profiler. Do you have an external display attached or have had one recently? Have you rebooted?

Have you been deleting files. Particularly drivers etc? Or maybe an odd way of installing?

I don't suppose you used the little application some have been using to roll back the recent Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 (in an effort to fix the MBP sleep/wake issues)?

If you did, this may be related.
