Hi,

I work for a small company and we are buying two Macbook pros soon. One of them is to be mainly used for video editing (5 to 10 min for TV) and the other will be used by me for all the basics (word processing, web surfing, etc) and photography editing in photoshop and all, plus probably some sound editing. I'm currently still using my old eMac from 3 years ago, which is not that great. My problem is that the difference between my eMac and what is available today is so great that I don't know what kind of difference in performance I would have between the different choices out there.

I was thinking of getting:

-Macbook Pro 17" with 4gb of RAM for video editing
-Macbook pro 15" for photo, but which one?

What do you guys think? Any advice is appreciated.

The 17" is a beast so you got your video covered.
Since your not doing anything video related on the other one I'd get the base model. If money's not a problem get the 2.5" one but, I'd get the base.

Frankly, every model will suit your need well. I recommend older SantaRosa models though - they are heavily discounted now and are just as powerful + they have the remote ;)

well i can tell you that the high res screen on the 17's are beautiful and it basically comes down to money for the deciding factor on the computers because anything will work

17" is good for video but if it's going to be traveled with you might want to consider the top 15" because the 17 is quite large. Any of the Santa rosa pros would be fine for your everyday use.

To put it in perspective, many wintel 14" or 15" laptops weights the same as the 17" MBP.

17" is not quite large. I carry it every day.

Perhaps you should work out.

He mentioned the size, not the weight. I can carry my 15" MBP easily, but it just won't physically fit into several of my bags. This problem would obviously be worse with a larger laptop.

For video work (assuming you're going to be in a studio/not constantly on the move), you may be better off with a 15" MacBook Pro and an external monitor. Just a thought :)
