Ok guys, I've taken all of your advice and now I've made the decision

Even though I have been the one telling eeeeeeeeeeeeveryone to wait for montevina I've now been swayed by the advice given by all of you good people. I've put off getting an mbp since sept as I've been waiting for a worth while update and hoping for a case re-design. In this time I have noticed how much I would have used the mbp if I did have it and today I've just decided to stop doing without and joined the club. Another thing that swayed me was the talk of a lot of rev-a apple products being a bit crap so I'd hate to wait for an all new mbp with re-design and the works only to get hacked off with the faults (if there were any) and end up regretting my purchase.

Anyways here's my question before I order. I am a graphics person so I will be getting the matte screen but I would like to know if the 100mhz will make a difference and is worth the £160 upgrade. In addition I would like to know if I would be better off downgrading the hard-drive to 200gb to take advantage of the 7200rpm.

I will be using the mbp mostly for graphic design work and using the following programs quite a lot:

illustrator
quark
dreamweaver
indesign
photoshop

I'd really appreciate it if you guys could help me out on this as I need to justify spending the extra ££!

Also as I'm a uni student can I walk into an apple store to use the discount or do I need to phone the higher education shop to get the 14% off???

AAAAAAAAAND what's the best way to blag cheap Applecare????

AAAAAAANNDD FINALLY what's the best case (as in bag not slip over wallet) to keep my mbp looking good for a long time to come??

HE discount cannot be got from the store. Fortunately for you HE entitles Macs to the otherwise pricey AppleCare for 3 years (although you will have to pay £45 if you want the 3 year phone support).

The % of the HD free makes a big difference, and as you're doing graphics, I think the bigger HD may be better.
 
sorry for being a complete dumbass but what you're saying is HE gives you Applecare for 3 years automatically but just without the phone support?????????

Is this different in Europe?

(I'm in the US)

I've gotten my educational discount before by walking into an Apple Store and flashing my student ID badge.

Also, the educational discount can be applied towards AppleCare (it's still more expensive than AppleCare for the Macbook or Macbook Air) but being a student doesn't net you free AppleCare for the laptop.

Yes. Even on the online HE store you cannot buy any AppleCare except the £45 phone support with a Mac. I have done this with multiple Macs and on one had a repair after 1 year.

I don't know about the US, sorry, but in the UK you cannot get the Higher Education discount in store, only the regular one, and the AppleCare is included with the HE discount.
 
In North America you are able to get your student discount in store as long as you have proof that you are a student.

As far as getting Apple Care on ebay, how does that work. How are they able to sell it at such a cheap price? Especially knowing people who work in retail, i.e., bestbuy, they have told me that Apple products are price protected and they don't get discounts on them. So, is it safe to buy off ebay/ are you getting a legit AC?

just want to ask how the RAM is in the mbp ie is it 2 1gb sticks or 1 2gb stick???

want to kit it out to 4gb ram.

I am using my new 2.5 with dreamweaver, final cut, logic and aperture, I prefer the bigger HDD. I got glossy as I am not a pro user I muck amount with mine. Stick 4 gigs in and the baby flys. I got mine using HE but I simply got the standard with glossy and no apple care at £1359.48.

I got a case mate case and think it is awesome so far. I did not want a speck case after the last one, scratched my macbook pro pretty badly.

Can I confirm that you do get apple care minus the phone support included in the price.
 
I'm not sure if you do, to be honest I cant see them giving away a £250 product even if you are a student.

With the ram did you have to buy 2x2gb sticks or just the one as the pro came with a 1x2gb stick already?
 
I know they did a while ago, because I got it with my last macbook pro and imac as well.

I am going to check on the site now.
 
Just checked and yes you are upgrading to full phone support, for the extra £58.75, otherwise you still get the hardware support. Here you go from the web site.

So 60 quid for a 3 year warrany without phone support? Sign me up! Seriously who needs phone support when we have great forums like these? And if anything you can always go to the Genius bar if need be.
 
what a blagger, the dude said you dont get 3 years. only 1 year.

shall i do him or just keep the applecare?

No, the 3 years hardware support is free when you purchase the machine, via the UK HE site. It is an agreement they have with HE. The £60 quid is to upgrade it to 3 years phone support.
