Sound "Equalizer" Options?

I believe that many people have also experienced the same problem as me, the Sound Check option in iTunes which won't do the job properly. Some of my 128kps AAC music files in iTunes does not have the same loudness level as most of the other 128kps AACs.

Are there any free open source applications out there that allows you to convert audio files into one unified volume?
