So I'm traveling and brought along my ATV just for kicks. Hotel room TV happened to have component inputs, so I plug in the ATV, turn on the TV, switch to component inputs and see nothing but scrolling garbage on the screen. This is, of course because unlike my TV at home, this TV is non widescreen and non HDTV so my home video settings in the ATV are incompatible with this TV.
After 30 minutes of scouring the web, I finally find the method to get the ATV to cycle through all it's resolutions until you get to one that works with your TV. Thought I would share it in case someone else runs into the same problem.

To select a video mode:
- Press and hold both Menu and Menu up/scroll (+) on the Apple Remote for about 6 seconds. Apple TV will cycle through different display resolutions.
- When Apple TV reaches an acceptable display resolution and "If you can see the Apple logo, select OK" appears on your TV screen, press the Play button on the Remote.
