Which database for school MIS?

I wonder if anyone can advise me on databases? I'd like to create a data management information system for a small school, mainly for the collation and printing of grades and academic reports. I'd like it to have a browser-based front end so it can be used by Windows users and Mac users with no installed database software.

What tools do I need? I've used Filemaker before (but I'd need to upgrade from my current v7 I think). Or would MySQL be a possibility? Can I use the school network server (Windows server2003) or would I need a separate box (Win/Linux/Mac?).

If it sounds like I am out of my depth, please bear with me. Any advice, info or links would be greatly appreciated.

IMO simplest would be MySQL, maybe you could just create a php website, that way it would be accessed by macs and windows without any compatibility problems. I've set up MySQL servers on my own computer before so I guess you could use your school's server.

You are out of your depth. School management systems are not starter projects. Apple used to sell one, which it subsequently sold to Pearson IIRC. The data are only part of the concerns of a database developer. Even more important are quality control and security. There are probably legal standards governing the type of system you want. In this case, your only legal options may be commercial packages. Your first step should be to contact several of your peer institutions to see what they are using. Your school will have invest some of its resources into a license that fits its needs.
