i use my ipod touch in the gym (its strapped around my arm in a armband case). it is very well protected from getting hit and stuff, but i was wondering about the accelrometer. would continual movement back and forth, such as running, rowing machine and cross trainer cause any harm to the accelerometer. or does it switch itself off when the screen is turned off (one press of top button)?

any thoughts would be a help.

I would guess (guess!) that if the accelerating forces were strong enough, they would damage your brain first (another device that is quite sensitive to rapid acceleration / deceleration), before the iPod. ;) In other words, you should be fine...

On the other hand, the accelerometer is electromechanical. There is really no switching it off... the part that could get damaged is mechanical, and there's no way to prevent it from deflecting due to acceleration, besides not accelerating it to begin with.
