I have a G3 blue and white upgraded with 1gb of ram and a G4 sonnet 500mhz cpu, ati rage 128 card and WD 40gig hard drive. I have a copy of Tiger and I just want to load it up on the hard drive. The drive originally had os 9.1 on it in japenese. so that didn't work out so well I bought it off e-bay I reformated the drive then formated it as HFS+ using MacDrive 7 in windows then pluged it back into my mac and when I boot up I just get "Finder/?" just blinks. I put the cd in tried restarting holding down c and still nothing just finder shows up again blinking with the ?. any help would be awesome.

He's right. Or, since you have the legal version of the DVD, I guess it wouldn't be too much of a stretch if you wanted to torrent the Tiger ISOs on your PC and then burn them to disk so your drive could read them.
If you want better performance in the GUI, you're going to want to upgrade your video card, otherwise window resizing/collapsing is going to suck.. anything pre-Radeon/GeForce doesn't provide Quartz Extreme acceleration

Which? Buying a DVD drive or torrenting the ISOs? I've done it, and it works.. installed it on the unsupported Beige G3 back at home (B&Ws are supported just fine under Tiger).

That would be the version you want; CD format for the PowerPC. There are several versions..... DVD/x86, DVD/PPC, CD/x86 and CD/PPC.. you want the one linked.
You only need to download CDs 1, 2 and 3... the fourth is extras. Actually, the 3rd might even be just extras, but best stick to 3 to be safe. During installation, you get to select a great deal of what you install... which can cut the overall installation by up to half, or even more; my advice is don't install additional fonts if you don't feel like you need them (several hundred megs), and do not install all those printer drivers.. I think they may take up as much as a gig of space. Worthless since you have at most one printer on the machine, possibly none, and installing from a CD that takes a lot of time.

I have those cd's and I burned them as a .dmg file using MacDrive 7 but when I put the cd in and load up my mac I just get finder/? as for the dvd drive I have a bunch laying around I was going to order Tiger like buy it if the torrent thing didn't work out and so far it's not. if confused about anything I said well idk lol let me know i'll try to clear it up.
You should be putting CD #1 into the drive and then holding down the 'C' key while you reboot. You may have to hold down 'C' for 10-20 seconds. At that point, the Mac should boot up from the CD and the OS X installer will start.

yup and still I have finder mocking me with his oh so happy face that he has and then the good ol' ?. so I get finder/? whether or not i hold down the c key or if I don't hold down the c key.
Then you either didn't burn a good, bootable CD or else your CD drive doesn't support booting.

I had os 9 I reformatted it cause it was in Japanese so I couldn't understand a damn thing I bought the mac off e-bay for like $50
Yea just get the dvd drive off of Newegg.com. This Samsung is a fast Dual Layer DVD burner with lightscribe for $27. A user on XLR8yourmac.com does list this as working in their Mac.
As for your boot problem, have you confirmed that your CD drive actually reads discs? I would be shocked if it still works as I have not had a drive actually work for more that a year or two since the late 90's when they started making really cheap CD/DVD drives. The ones in the early to mid 90's seemed to last forever when they cost several hundred dollars, probably since they did not use the cheapest parts possible.

I'll try the dvd drive method today and let you guys know what happens and yea h the cd drive still works cause when os 9.1 was installed it read it just read it in Japanese.
Well, if you just borned the DMG file as data, I don't see how it would work, since it has to be mounted first, and the firmware in your mac isn't exactly going to know what to do with it.
The .dmg would have had to be opened first (mounted), and then "copied." I had been under the impression they were ISOs, I guess not. Hm.
