Hi All, with the advent of the PS3 getting Divx subtitle support in it's latest firmware revision, I'm trying to encode a Divx file to add subtitles.

I can't for the life of me find a Mac application that will add a subtitle stream to a Divx file - usually this results in the creation of a .divx file.

(.divx file containers support multiple audio and subtitle stream, and that is the format the PS3 requires the file to be in to play back the subtitles).

I do not want to "burn in" the subtitles to the video stream as this would require transcoding the video, which I do not want to do (time consuming, and can ruin a perfectly good encode).

I've found the following programs for Windows, but can't seem to find a Mac equivalent:

http://www.calcitapp.com/AVIAddXSubs.php
http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAviSub.php?b2=1
http://userxp.tripod.com/sub2divx.htm

As you can see by those bits of software, they simply take the avi file, the srt file and combines them into a .divx file with no transcoding.

Has anyone got a similar solution for the mac world? I tried using the AVIAddXSubs via Darwine but it didn't seem to work.

Update - ok I did get AVIAddXSubs to work in Darwine, but I had a weird font problem (to do with freetype I believe), so only got symbols instead of proper characters...

I would still be interested in any software that did this. I can get a Window program to work via Boot Camp, but would rather not if I have the choice. I also wouldn't mind if a Linux (CLI please) program did the same. Thanks.

Yep, I'm still after a nice mac solution - surely other people out there have a need for a similar program?

Hey guys,

Im also looking for a mac solution, and since months have past by I was wondering if you finally found a solution, because i could not find one.

Since posting this originally, I've done it a few times, using the Windows software I mentioned in the first post:

http://www.calcitapp.com/AVIAddXSubs.php

This works well using this build of Darwine:

http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/

And installing the fonts in the package that comes in the download.

Has worked perfectly well for me, even though it's probably not the ideal solution.

Hello

I just registered to this site to thank mr eonaeon , thanks for teaching me how to do this. I followed your instructions and now im streaming my films from my mac to my ps3 WITH subtitles!! incredible and no need to recode just 2mins per film. Brilliant plus ive been looking for this for months. Thanks now the only thing thats missing for me is playing .mkv in ps3 [hdrips..] without recoding.

good bye and enjoy your subtitles everybody!

I still get the weird symbols in my subtitles. In Finland we have these ä and ö letters and the symbols have usually replaced those letters.

It's pretty weird, cause if I convert a .sub file to .srt on PC with Subtitle Workshop and then convert the .avi and the .srt file to a .divx file (using Darwine and Aviaddxsubs) everything is great! But if i convert a .sub file to a .srt file using Jubler, then I get the symbols. And what makes it even more stranger, is that watching the .avi file with VLC-player with the converted .srt file, nothing is wrong there. But then I use Aviaddxsubs and then I get the symbols.

So could someone help me with this, please? I can't change the encoding of the subtitles in Jubler, it won't let me save them in none other than UTF-8 encoding mode.

Hi guys,

That's all very well, but it doesn't work with me...
Maybe I'm just a computer-illiterate, but my computer (a Mac) doesn't accept these things...
About the Darwine thing; it says something about the wrong architecture and thereby doesn't open. And with the AVIAddXSubs... Kind of the same story, PLUS some things just open with Texteditor and I get a whole lot of code...
Maybe I'm just not doing it the right way, but what do I have to do then? And to put the subtitles together with the movie, how does that work? I don't get the info...
Can someone please help me?!
I'm sorry I'm such a stupid moron... :S
