If I have an American iPhone and I use it only for calls and text messages in canada, will I escape a giant bill?

I don't plan on using e-mail, maps, or the internet at all, but I'm worried I might still see some fees.

I understand that there will be international roaming on calls, but does the iPhone automatically use the edge or can I turn it off?

There is several plan you can sign up with, such as 3.99 Canada Roaming plan from ATT and 20 sth roaming data plan too~ just call them and ask if you really need to use roaming in Canada~ in fact the ATT's roaming data charge actually is cheaper than local service provider..... doesn't make sense indeed.

Or you could unlock your phone and use it on a canadian GSM carrier (Fido/Rogers) no problem.
