problem playing video files

Ok, so I have all these video files that I made from my sony camcorder. And they played just fine on my old computer running windows XP.

Recently, I moved my harddrive to a new computer running vista, and to my (brand new) macbook, but I'm having trouble playing the videos. In vista, the video will play (at a slow framerate) and with no sound, and on the mac, most of the videos won't even open. I'd say about 5% of my videos actually work.

I don't understand what the problem here is, since these videos were uploaded straight from my camera to my harddrive.

Can anyone think of a possible solution to this? The best I can think of is opening them up in windows movie maker, and reformating them, or something. But I'd rather try another approach, as reformatting 20gigs of video seems rather tedious to me.

any help on this matter, much appreaciated.

I've noticed that occasionally video captures while on a Windows machine will hiccup on a Mac. Perhaps the best "workaround" is to re-digitize the video on the Mac in iMovie. I'm not a big fan of converting video from format to format, although sometimes it's necessary. Plus the time it takes to reformat 20 GB could take as long as re capturing the video in real time.

Just a thought... I'm sure others will chime in. :)
 
i couldn't get them to work in imove. when I tried to import them, the files were greyed out, and I couldn't select them.

I have downloaded another program to attempt to convert them, havn't tried it out yet, but I'll let you guys know how it goes.

as for the file format, they are .mpg files. For the video capture thing, I used the software that came with the camera...

I don't know... it would really suck if all my files got corrupted somehow....


P.S. Here's the weird thing... I've had two cameras in the past, first, a regular sony handycam camera, and then a better camcorder, now, all the videos I made with my first one work absolutly fine, and the videos made with the latter dont, and they're both exactly the same file format.

I just don't get it. :frustrated:
