moving old TM backup files to new TC

I'd like to be able to move a Time Machine backup history to a new Time Capsule, and just have Time Machine continue to add to that stack. Apparently this is not doable, Time Machine has to initialize the TC disk with a full fresh backup.

I guess I can treat the old stack as an archive and use the disk for something else.
