Hey,

I'm trying to fix my friends Macbook Pro. Everytime it's turned on it stays at the grey screen and does not go any further than that. The Apple logo on the gray screen doesn't even show up. She says she didnt hit it up against anything or spill anything in it. It seems the hard drive makes a clicking noise for the first 30 seconds or so, but eventually stops.

I've tried to get it into single user mode, but that won't even work.

Any suggestions?

after waiting about 5 minutes of staring at the gray screen, a folder came up with a question mark on it.

Reinstall OS X? (Tiger)

hmmm... you probably had Malicious access to your Mac. or u could have gotten a virus that ate all your system files.

you may have to reinstall tiger.

Hard Drive failure.

Ring Apple and ask them to replace the hard drive under warranty...

Before I get her to call apple and get a new HD, should I try booting from restore cd and press 'c' and then run the disk utility repair permissions? and then try re installing OSX?

Or should I not bother and just get her to ask for a new HD?

Just call Apple to set up a repair to get the HD replaced if it's still under warranty. If it's taking over 30 seconds to boot and constantly making a clicking noise, the HD is pretty much fried. I would only boot the MBP off the System DVD only to see if you can get to files that need to be backed-up before it's sent off for repair (hopefully a backup was made before it totally quit working).
