Is there such a list somewhere? I wasn't able to easily find one that listed the drives that would work and ranked them by features, speed, and most importantly noise level.

All I know is that the Optiarc 7170A that came with my Mac Pro is unacceptably loud. I'm not sure asking Apple to swap it would get me anywhere other then being without a machine for a bit. I probably wouldn't care for the occasional CD/DVD burn or backup, but there's no way I would use it to watch a movie. It reminds me of the 6 fan PC enclosure I replaced.

If you know of a list, please post a link. If not, maybe we should just start one stating drive brand, model, fit inside a mac pro, and noise level.

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-115D works perfectly as well. Just remove the front bezel from the tray so it clears the lower door.

Pioneer DVR-115D as Second Optical Drive

Hi, I'm new to Macs and would very much appreciate any help with installing the 115D as the second (lower) drive. After installing the drive, my MacPro froze - (that is, gave me a "white" display - no "gears" - after the initial power-on tone - the operating system does not seem to initialize).

After disconnecting the drive everything is fine. Most of the posts I've read on this and other forums discuss replacing the existing drive, not adding a second. Pioneer's documentation and web site have not been helpful. I'll mention that there is a physical jumper on this drive - any particular setting required there?

Again, thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Best...

Second Optical Drive - it was the jumper - "Cable Select"

apologies for posting pre-maturely - it was the jumper (needed to be set at Cable Select (middle) jumper position).

I will mention that this drive (Pioneer DVR-115D (also labeled DVR-1910)) was a snap to install, is quiet, and is noticeably faster than the primary drive. $49.

Thanks all!
