Ugh.

I hate invisible mode on instant messenger. I have some friends that use it and I can never tell if they're on. It's totally fun to attempt to message them randomly to see if they are. Invisible mode is not much more than a glorified email mode.

I know the "technical" reason it's there, but come on. The whole purpose of instant messenger, for the most part, is to be able to see which of your "buddies" is online and perhaps willing to talk. If you don't want to be bothered, set your status to away.

I happen to quite like this mode. I use Adium with both MSN, and GTalk. Invisible allows me to remain signed in on both systems, and still talk to people on Gtalk (who are in Engineering just like me), while remaining "Appear Offline" to the MSN contacts. Very useful when you're trying to do some assignments, when the MSN people usually pester you regardless of your "Busy" or "Away" status. Which in my opinion is well worth having the feature.

So it has its uses.

I don't hate that, I hate when people always leave their status on away.

It's like walking into a conference room and ignoring everyone who tries to talk to you.

I use invisible mode when i am in another convo so other ppl don't bother me while i am talking to the person.

Yeah, I don't like it. What's the point of signing in if you're not going to talk to people?

Maybe because they only want to talk to one person in particular. Perhaps they don't want to talk to everyone. Perhaps it's egotistical to presume that just because someone is online, they want to talk to YOU?

Some people have their reasons.

I wish IM clients would let you appear online/off by group, I only really want to appear online to about 1/4 of my list most of the time.

I've been doing that. I just leave an away message on. I think I'm just lazy, not that it takes that much effort. All my friend know when I'm at my computer (no idle time), that's fine with me.

Yes! I would love to have that feature! Too bad the networks don't support it, yet.....
