why can't i add them? I downloaded tons of movies and tv shows, but i can't drag/drop them into itunes. what gives?

you know, honestly, i'm not sure. the files are all .avi
does itunes accept .avi's? if not, what do i need to do to convert them and to what format?

No, .avi isn't an iTunes format, unless there's a plugin I don't know about. You need to convert the files into .m4v or .mov. There's plenty of conversion software about. It would help to know whether you're on a Windows PC or a Mac. I'm going to assume a Mac because you're trying to drag and drop rather than import using an unnecessarily complex sequence of menus and dialog boxes

There's probably a whole raft of other options, but since I've never downloaded an .avi it's not something I've had to deal with before.I suggest you find out how to set up a batch processing job and leave your machine working on it overnight--much less frustrating than trying to use your computer while it's working away at a seemingly endless task.
Quality
There will definitley be a drop in quality if you go with the deafault settings. I find that the deafaults are fine dr iPod viewing, but on my iMac 20" they're horrible. If you want to watch them on a computer, and have free disk space, choose the "go nuts" setting.
