How should I ask?

Hello, my name is Nick T. and I’m a switcher. I’ve been running a Mac mini alongside my WinXP box for about a year now and find OS X to be an excellent operating system, but there are some things that I would like to be able to do in the old WinXP way.

It would be nice to be able to post a question like, “How can I delete individual files from the Trash like in Windows?” and not feel like I’d farted in church.

I had to find out for myself that it can’t be done from the GUI; but it’s easy to go to Terminal and rm to my heart’s content.

I’m looking for acceptable ways to ask about things (especially in Finder) like the example above without offending the Mac fanatics.
 
Hi Nick,

I think that as long as you are clear in asking your question and aren't berating anything or anyone, you're bound to get some helpful replies. I'm sure people realize that not everyone can be experts at navigating and using the OS, so just ask away and don't worry about offending anyone. Cheers.
 
I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how helpful and kind the members of the MR forums are. There seems to be a hostility toward the Mac over on other PC forums I frequent. I would post up you questions in this area and I'm sure you'll get helpful and courteous responses
 
How about "I'm a switcher, what's the Mac equivalent of [insert here]?" I don't see how anyone could flame you for phrasing your question in this manner.
 
I've recently seen the light myself, Nick.

Another two great suggestions?

1 - Do a search here, chances are someone else who has switched might have already asked it, saving you from having to.

2 - Do a search for David Pogue on Amazon, he writes some fantastic "Missing Manaul" books that are invaluable resources.

Thanks for your responses everybody. Now I've got more confidence about asking questions.

David Pogue is great! I recently updated to the Leopard versions of both his Missing Manuals for OS X.
