first of all, although almost april, this is not an april fools joke. that's sooo 2007

i work for an apple reseller in australia, and today, one of my customers was a bit panicked, because they wanted to run bootcamp and couldn't find a copy of vista anywhere (not something to stress about, in my opinion, but i digress...). "luckily" we had a copy of XP for just such occasions, which i sold to her.

in passing, she said that someone at dick smith, a huge electronics retailer in australia, had told her that they had no stock as microsoft was recalling it. at the time, i thought "that's a weird, the online technology world surely would have posted about this already" and having spent half the morning on engadget and other sites with no such musings, cast the thought aside as she left.

fast forward 12 hours later, (again, wasting away the hours online) and i realise what she said. the words sank in.

i've just done a search on dick smith's website, and they have less than 100 copies of vista. that's not less than 100 copies of home premium, but less than 100 copies, total.

and this isn't just one store, dick smith have less than 100 copies of vista, of any version, across all of their stores in australia. also, they've removed it from their online store, so you have to go into a store physically to buy a copy.

dick smith is owned by woolworths (the australian brand), which includes dick smith, big w, and tandy electronics, in australia and new zealand. they are one of (if not the) biggest retailers of electrical goods in australia and new zealand. (riveting, i know )

however, this makes it very hard to buy vista here. from where i sit now, the closest copy of vista in a store is no less than 2 hours drive away (this gives me a warm fuzzy feeling).

so i thought that i'd ask you guys: locally, are people easily able to obtain vista? are stocks really low? getting lower?

in short, does it look like vista is about to be recalled? or was this lady telling me second hand information from a sales clerk who was misinformed?

aren't gonna happen, how does M$ recall a OS with 13% market share? Not to mention it will sure cause much more problem than whatever M$ has right now with it (which I don't feel any).

Unless the boxes are exploding and killing people, it's doubtful. Even then, it would depend on the cost per life.

Just thinking out loud here.

Would MS recall existing packages and replace them with an updated version of Vista.

Yeah, I know you can DL the updates, but maybe this is a new way to package Vista versions and issue a price change at the same time.

Again, just thinking out loud here wondering why MS would do a recall, if true.

what i'm most interested in is what stock is like elsewhere.
anywhere in australia at the moment, it's pretty much impossible without a 2 hour drive from a capital city.

personally, i doubt i would be the first to know about a major recall like this, but, let's face it, we throw far more speculation out there when it looks like apple is about to release something.

so humor me for a minute. please?
next time you're in a shopping centre or a shop with vista, just, you know, have a look?

In actuality, I don't think Vista is any buggier than any other MS OS in its first year. I think it's just that after years of the same old thing from MS, people have less patience. Apple and Linux/Unix have shown that you don't have to suffer to use a computer and Windows users are starting to notice more than ever before.

Thats probably not bug related.

It has been 6 months and two 0.01 patches, many leopard users still have problems.

Sp1?

It would seem most likely that the retail stock is either draining in anticipation of the new SP1 version of Vista, or they have yanked back the originals so that all new buyers get SP1 instead.

I know if I had a product with a bad reputation, I'd want it off shelves as soon as the replacement was imminent.

?

Wonder if they put XP in a Vista box - would anyone notice?

"Boxes exploding....the cost per life.....LOL ROFL"
