I am new to torrents and only want to use them for legal files etc. I have tried transmission and it seems easy but is there any security risk to my computer when using it.

Can someone log onto my computer when I am downloading torrents and does uploading effect anything either?

An thoughts would be appreciated

No, you're fine.

As for web browsing, mine isn't affected at all when downloading torrents. it just depends on your connection speed.

if the upload is saturated, your requests get slowed down. UNless you have comcast or something, that will automatically throttle your bit torrent. Then you're fine ^.^

Great thanks, I suddenly got paranoid that someone could log onto my computer and steal all my files!!!

Is there anything else I should think about when downloading torrents? Protecting ip?

If what you're downloading is legal, there is no reason to worry about anything.. If on the other hand it isn't, well then there are a few things that you should do but they can't be discussed here.. :)
