I ran the Apple hardware test and came back with this code - 4SNS/1/40000000: TCOP. I have a 2.0 15' MBP and I have run into some issues when trying to use Handbrake on it. What happens is the MBP gets so hot it turns itself off. I can't get any movies to burn, I used to never have a problem with handbrake it burned movies no problem. I thought maybe one of my sensors or fans was bad so I ran hardware test and got the error.

The MBP is not covered under applecare, my original warranty ran out while I was deployed to Afghanistan and Apple doesn't want to let me extend it under any exception, because the original warranty ran out. From what I was reading on the apple support section was that the logic board needs to be replaced. The MBP runs fine except for the heat issue. The MBP doesn't get hot and shutoff unless I am running Handbrake. I will weigh the cost of a logic board replacement opposed to a new MBP. I want to upgrade anyway, so I might just give this to my teenage son and upgrade to the latest and greatest.

Any advice or comments are welcome. Thanks.

Did you call them or went to the genius bar? I would suggest you to try the second variant, if you carefully explain the situation(talk to the manager), tell that you wanted to buy Applecare but didn't have chance to do it, they might offer you a free repair, or at least make it cheaper.
