Long time reader, first time register..er..
I broke down and bought my Air last week and it has been great. I used to use a EEE PC and despite the price and the options that come with it, I just couldn't see using it long term. Not to mention the fact my fingers cramped typing for two hours in class taking down notes. The size can't be beat but I'd like to be able to type without popping pain killers.
I was hesitent because on forums world wide those cautious consumers always warn, never buy first generation products. But I did. Meh!
Now I'm starting to wonder if they were right.
First thing I noticed was the clicking fan noise. I know the difference between high and low fan speed sounds and the sound of the hard drive. This is none of those two. When I have it on a flat surface it's fine, but if I tilt the machine forward or back I get this grinding/clicking sound from the fan like it's not sitting properly at an angle. My only other laptop I own is my MBP which doesn't do this (and is flawless by the way! So glad I forked over the cash for it - going on two years old and it still has better specs than some machines out there!) and I'm aware that most machines don't usually work on an angle. But when you're sitting in a chair you don't really focus on getting a leveller out to type on your laptop or surf the web.
I tried searching the Apple forum and got nothing valuable (or as using the wrong search parameters!) and looked here and only found one thread on it. So far most people don't seem to be experiencing this (correct me if I'm wrong!) so I'm just wondering if it's something serious or I should just leave it and see what happens. Or just take it apart myself and wiggle the fan around.
The second thing that annoys me is a crunching sound from the speaker. This is something I did look for as well but people have different adjectives for the sound so I'm not sure if it's the same thing or not. Mine seems to be an actual CRUNCH sound coming from the speaker area (arrow keys) that happens every few seconds. Doesn't matter if the speakers are 0 or 100 it still does this. I found a solution for it is having the machine run something CPU intensive, as in WoW for an example. With the speakers turned off you don't hear a thing despite the loud fan noise. Are there more speakers sounds than the one I get, or is there a whole forum dedicated to the MBA Crunch?
Other than that stuff everything is amazing. I even get the core shut down during WoW and yet I don't get weird stuttering. I just get near or over single digit FPS during that time.
