So I replaced my desktop PC and am now totally an Apple convert (see sig). I have been doing research into a good choice for a widescreen monitor but I'm pretty much more confused now than when I started. Talk of TN, PVA, MVA, IPS, backlight bleeding and contrast has me timid about what display to invest in.

A colleague suggested the Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP. Can a 2008 Mac Pro with an 8800GT power a 24" monitor in games with good FPS? Would a 22" be a safer bet? If anyone has suggestions from personal experience I would truly appreciate it. My main uses are audio editing/mixing and gaming.

I currently have a Dell E248WFP. It's 24 inches, only $449 (and it's on sale a lot... I got mine for $369), and is a beautiful monitor. Once you tweak the colors and brightness to match your personal tastes, you really cannot do better for the money. I use it for gaming, photo and movie editing, creating documents, and just surfing the web. It's a great monitor for anything you're doing.

I was almost going to spring for the UltraSharp, but I couldn't see anything to justify the price difference for my uses. If you don't need the adjustable height, the extra USB ports, and the added connectivity, it's definitely the monitor to get. If you'd like the extra features, spend the extra $200 on the UltraSharp model.
