I recently called apple (about 5 times since AT&T dropped my call) because I want to upgrade the HDD on my macbook pro to 250gb. Apple told me they couldn't do it. This is BS surely apple will service their own machines. I have been looking for some support on apple's site but the support page sucks. I WILL NOT send my expensive machine to a third party group who screwed me over twice! Please direct me to this page that I can't find that explains this to me.

Apple doesn't do upgrades unless you get a BTO machine. However, there are a number of Apple Authorized Service Locations (ASL) that can perform an upgrade for you - my local Apple store even provided me with a list of local ASLs. I used MicroCenter to upgrade the 120 GB HD in my MBP to a new Western Digital 250 GB HD. The charged $60 for the service, but to me it was worth it. Now, if you search the forums, I am sure you will come across people who have done the HD upgrade themselves.
According to Apple, If you change out the HD yourself, you void the warranty. If you take it to an ASL and have them do it, you do NOT void your warranty.

Yeah, I recently upgraded mine to 320GB. It was a piece of cake as long as you take your time and follow these steps. Took less than 15 minutes.

I would gladly upgrade it myself because I've done it before and know what I'm doing. BUT I also want to stay within the warranty.Apple WTH do your own upgrades.
Dude, they can't tell if you did it yourself or a repair center did it. Just don't voluntarily tell them!

but a friend of mine (who has the same mac) talked about putting a 320gig in his vs the 200gig 7200rpm. Any reason why it wouldn't?

It'll only void your warranty if you screw something up in the process,if you have to get it repaired swap back to the original parts
At present ( not for long,as there's the new samsung 500GB waiting to be stocked ) the 320 WD is the largest drive available to fit your Mac,so your friend is right,the 250 is probably the largest they stock
