What you get now is the MB, which is just as fast as a MBP and graphics just as good as the PB.

The market for 12" G4 powerbooks is almost worth investing in. The latter models are going for around $800 on ebay. It won't be too long before the become more expensive than macbooks. I agree that a new 12" apple laptop would be nice but it's probably not going to happen with the MBA.

4 months ago, this wold have been an awesome product, and it would sell in awesome numbers, no doubt.

But now that Apple has the air, they won't do it. The teo would compete, and the 12' MBP would probably win, and Steve just won't allow his egoBook I mean, MacBook Air to fail.

The 12"PB you want is a compromise between the MacBook Air, MacBook and MacBook Pro, its not going to happen ;).

I got fed up with waiting in the end and bought a 15" MBP last month. Just not the same. :(

I'm still using a 12" last model G4 ibook. I love the form factor. I'm also not fond of widescreen monitors. If you don't watch movies on your laptop (I don't) , and when you consider that most websites convey information by scrolling up and down, on the page (even now my firefox window is considerably narrower than the available screen width), I don't understand the move to widescreen. I stick to non-widescreen monitors on my dualscreen PC at work for the same reason. I think that there is a huge hole in apple's notebook lineup that the air did not fill. In fact, this announcement on Gizmodo today of a eepc running xp for $399 is the most attractive notebook proposal I have seen in a long time. I'm not a power user but I want a small, skype-videoconference machine, at least until the next iphone (hopefully) has videoconference capability.

In what way not the same?

Wouldn't the improved speed and screen pixels of a new, recent MBP more than make up for the loss of the small form factor?
Also a 15" is thinner, isn't it?

I'm a 12" PB owner and am still undecided whether it's worth upgrading, so I'm interested to hear more about your experience.

I never worried about just chucking the 12" into a bag and lugging it around. The 15" doesn't feel flimsy exactly, but it doesn't seem as robust. I feel I have to take care of it in a way that the 12" didn't need.

I'm sure it's part of the 'new' feeling and you likely felt that way when you first got your 12" PB. Now that it's a few years old and antiquated you don't feel such a desire to care for it optimally.

this is exactly why I'll never buy a new laptop again. used is the way to go... (unless I win the lottery;))

Surprisingly not. The 12" PB encouraged that sort of behaviour by its sheer robustness. Wonderful laptop.

Is it the build quality you are worried about or scratching it?

The latter would be indicative of a 'new' feeling as Mindflux suggested. I remember I had that same worry when I got my 12" PB new. I bought a PowerBook Sleeve and that solved it nicely without adding bulk.

But if it is the build quality you're worried about then of course that's another matter.

What prevented me from upgrading so far is the lack of alternatives.
I'm a bit sick of people suggesting the MacBook Air as a replacement.
Are these guys aware that the MBA is almost 2 inches (!) wider? That's almost 20% wider.
And it's about a third of an inch deeper.
Yes, it's thinner and lighter. But I care more about the footprint. And on that front the MBA is a behemoth compared to the 12" PowerBook.

My only hope is that once the much fabled Resolution Independence arrives bundled with smaller Montevina motherboards that Apple will introduce a 150dpi 12" MacBook Pro. At 150dpi we get 1440x1080 resolution.
With 200dpi (as the iPod nano) we would even get 1920x1400 resolution. BluRay HD anyone?
I'd be first in line!

Until then, I'm not so sure... all available options seem a bad compromise.

thats the exact difference

fixed it with TIMG

Uhm Eric, at 1600x1200 that picture might be a bit too large to post inline.
That's why I posted a link to it.

But it shows that the MBA is rather huge in comparison.
It's a thin notebook, but by no means small.

And as was pointed out already despite its smaller size and the almost 5 years older technology, the PowerBook 12" still has more graphics power than MBA.
And it has a DVD drive/burner built-in.

The MBA was never something I could consider unfortunately. I have two homes, plus client offices that I work from. With the MBA being more for those that are away from their main computer for a few hours, my more nomadic style of working means I need to carry as many features as possible with me.

I don't believe any laptop outside of the Panasonic Toughbook series encourages that behavior.

Perhaps some of it's rigidity came from the massive heatsink/spreader required to cool a G4?
