So I'm really interested in doing this Junior Statesmen of America (LINK) thing over the summer at Stanford. I'm 16 and I don't think my family will be able to pay the money ($4,450) since my mom and younger brother want to go visit my mother's family in Mexico and they need the money more than I do.

I was just wondering what you guys recommended in terms of fund raising. I'm thinking that I could probably get the Democratic party to donate some money, maybe the local radio station, teachers, etc.

Ideas?
I really want to go.
:(

Ask your school if they could donate money. They may support you on this. You never know. Otherwise, a fundraiser at school is another good idea. I like the idea of basing your fundraising around your school because there's such a dense population of people in a high school, and you're bound to people to donate if you do it right. Give a little speech in several classes as to why you want to go, and how you need everyone's help.

Great idea. I'm planning to talk to a few teachers and ask them for help since I'm pretty close to my teachers. They could probably help ask the administration, which I plan to do myself, for some help as well. I'm thinking that if I ask some organizations around that I could manage it.

does anyone have any experience with this?

You are young, so I think you'll need to roll up your selves. Besides, it will sound better when you run for public office later.

If you go door-to-door and offer to wash cars or mow lawns you should be able to make ~$400-500 per weekend (20-25 cars/lawns at $20). People will pay more if you explain why you are trying to raise the money. You should also offer to keep them up to date on your progress over e-mail or a letter. If it goes well they be glad to hear it, if not they might offer more money. Also, you can ask people to pledge a certain amount. Perhaps, one dollar for each extra car you wash.

If you keep organized, keep others informed, and stay enthusiastic you will raise the money you need.
