EDGE is the internet for the iPhone. It's 2.5G technology, which it's not that new, but the service is available anywhere you have service on your phone. It's not that fast, but it gets the job done.

EDGE is the data service via your phone line, AT&T charges you $ 20 for unlimited usage, and it's part of iPhone plan.
It's not as fast as wifi nor 3G but it gets the work done while you are out of a wifi network.
You get EDGE disconnected when you receive a phone call, so you can't browse the web during a phone conversation like you can if you have wifi.

EDGE is Enhanced Data GSM Environment. It's a data network similar in speed to Verizon's 1XRTT but I'm guessing with your 'cheers' that you're in the UK and not likely to know Verizon. In a theoretical world the maximum of current EDGE implementation is 384kbps but in a realistic world you'll hit a maximum of around 200 and then falling back to slower speeds as the signal is weaker.
You'll have EDGE access wherever you have phone access on the network. Sometimes if your signal is incredibly weak you'll lose connection with the EDGE network and be running GPRS-only.

That isn't technically true, or at least it isn't where I live. I was playing with an iPhone in an O2 store and there wasn't an Edge signal although there was a strong mobile signal. I asked the sales guy and he said I won't get an Edge signal everywhere.
I suppose it depends what hardware/software exists in the base station you are connected to.

Well that is O2. I was talking about AT&T, which i believe is a fact that it's available everywhere you have a voice signal, and if it isn't, you have GPRS.
Yes, you can browse the internet ass much as you like.
Hotmail will not work with the mail client. You have to use another service like IzyMail, BUT REMEMBER you can simply go to www.hotmail.com in Safari on the iPhone.
EDGE is like dial up on a the phone. Goes up to 200kbps DL.
And yes it's available everywhere you can AT&T signal.
