Getting a new mac, How do I keep apps and files?

I'm getting a new mac. I wont have both at the same time. I was wondering you to transfer all my apps and files. I was thinking about using Time Machine, and then putting the backup on the new mac. Would that be possible?

Yup, if you create a time machine backup you can use the 10.5 install cd to restore from a time machine backup.

If the new comp comes with ilife 08, and the old one has old ilife on it, what will happen? I want the new ilife.

I've never used this feature myself but if you do lose any apps that came with the computer you can reinstall them with the disk that comes with the computer.
