My new iPod touch that I got for Christmas, now has a cracked screen. I have put it up for sale in hopes for some money to put towards a 2nd Gen iPod touch that should come out in September.

I'm just wondering what you guys think will be the updates to the touch this year. I'm expecting the 16GB to take the 8GB's spot, better battery life, a new software update, and hopefully an addition of a 64GB flash memory option.

i think they'll stop production of the 8GB model and the 16 GB will become the 8GB's price and 32Gb will become 16GB's price and maybe a software update for the new touch as well as existing touches, the battery life pro. will improve. I only think there will be a storage upgrade. THERE WILL NOT BE Bluetooth, a camera or internal speakers becuase that is taking profit from iPhone.

Actually, they might add a microphone/speakers, because Jobs said that they would be allowing for VoIP over Wi-Fi for the iPhone, and they may want to make that available the iPT owners since it would be so easy to add.

As far as a camera goes- NEVER.:apple:

you are right about the iPhone profit. although a camera would be pretty sweet

I'd still like a camera, but itl never happen:cool:
i think you are spot on, there may even be a larger version, in the (further) future

So a camera would take away from the iPhone but turning the iPod into a wifi phone wouldn't?

The speaker/microphone wouldn't necessarily be only for VoIP:rolleyes:, it could also apply to a multitude of Nintendo DS-like games that may be released in the AppStore (the Nintendo DS has games that use the microphone capabilities:D).

If they:apple: want to make more money selling those types of games, then it would make sense to add that to the Touch, right? Besides, it isn't as though people buy iPhones because the Touch can't do VoIP:p! I highly doubt that half of the people who own an iPhone even know what VoIP is;), so it probably wouldn't interfere greatly with iPhone sales.

:cool:Maybe they:apple: will release something like an iPod Touch Pro:eek:: 64GB flash drive, better battery life, camera, bluetooth, and speaker/microphone. All for the low price of... $600:eek:? Thoughts?

all i really want is
wireless syncing
larger screen?
more memory at a cheaper price
camera:rolleyes:.

i am going to hold out till the ipod touch Gen2.

I doubt the touch will reach 64 GB, it would compete too much with the Classic line (yeah, I know they had 60 and 80 GB 5.5G's, but they weren't out at the same time)

The only thing I see apple really adding it bluetooth for wireless headset support, and no support of anything else like BT file transfer or syncing. If they don't add that just makes a solid product go down a notch. I would love to see apple add UMS, but being the close system freaks they are, it be a cold day in hell when that happens.

Bluetooth is a big one, followed by FM radio.

From the standpoint of a developer the big one for me is Bluetooth as this provides for a lot of interesting potential apps. This of course if Apple properly supports Bluetooth with the common profiles. The ability to communicate with the local world just explodes the little guys capabilities.

To the same extent an HOST USB port would be very nice. This of course is a bigger physical issue but again access to the local physical world is very important.

It has already been brought up in another thread but FM would be very nice.

A far bigger effort, but still possible, would be HD TV on the Touch. This delivered to a 720P screen.

Which by the way brings up another consideration. Apple needs a larger Touch to complement the current form factor. The goal here to make for a better platform to deliver video content on. That plus the fact that the current platform is a bit tiny to deliver some content on.

The iPod Touch will eventually replace the Classic Line when flash storage gets to those larger capacities. And anyways, when the iPods are updated again, most likely in September, the Classic will probably get larger hard drives as well (160 gb and 320 gb is my guess), so any overlap will probably be decreased.

The iPhone is really the limiting factor. As long as the iPhone is producing record profits you can expect the iPod Touch to stay the same... no camera, no mic, no BT, maybe a price cut.

That's my prediction.

Yeah, it would be used for VoIP. You know that it would. That's pretty much why everyone on here wants a speaker/mic. If they want to make more money, all they need to do is have Steve Jobs give a presentation, and people will buy whatever he is talking about, mic or no mic. They're not gonna add one because one game that you could possibly buy has optional sound input...

All of that, except the 64GB, is in the iPhone. 64GB would cost more than that at this point. Basically you're asking for an iphone without a cellular radio with more capacity so that you can have a souped up iPod and VoIP phone...

Exactly right. Eventually, maybe in 2010 or 2011, flash capacity will pass that of hard disks (at least of that size), and the classic will either move to flash or be erased from the line. However, it will probably see updates in September to 120/240GB, as there aren't any 160GB, 1.8" single platter drives on the market yet.

I highly doubt that there will ever be a camera in the iPod Touch.
It's an audio/video player. Not a cell phone.
An external speaker would be nice though. I think the only changes that will be made to the Touch are larger flash drives and some visual changes. I wouldn't really expect anything drastic considering the six generations of iPod Classics and you can easily tell the relation between all of them. Given past actions by Apple in the making of the several generation line of iPod Classics, I think that iPod Touches will remain pretty similar; excluding drive sizes.

I've had my Touch now for about three months, and I still love it! I keep it well protected in a case, so if the new changes in Sept are amazing, I'll sell my current Touch on Ebay and upgrade. My only real complaint with the current Touch is Coverflow when in landscape mode, and the wifi isn't reliable.

So a camera would take away from the iPhone but turning the iPod into a wifi phone wouldn't?

Yeah basically the iPod touch will never have the following

Camera
Calling capabilities (wifi or anything else)
Free upgrades (like the 1.1.3 and 2.0)
not 100% certain, but: speaker

Why won't it have a speaker? Because Apple wants you to buy the iPhone. If they had plans to put a speaker in the iPT there would be one already.
