Thermal Paste in the Mac Pro

How is the thermal paste in the 2008 Mac Pro?

Is it applied well?

Did any of you guys remove it and replace it with a more high-performance compound such as Arctic Silver 5 or Ceramique?

I have a feeling that Apple did a bad job correctly applying the thermal paste because some of the temperatures that I am seeing are a little on the high side.

I applied Arctic Silver 5 to the GPU on my X1900. It really did help to cool down the card and improve system stability. Before I would routinely suffer freeze-ups in Leopard using iTunes Visualizer, Spaces, Screen Saver, DVD plyaer, or any other GPU intensive task. After AS5, my system has been rock solid.

How about the CPUs?

Would you gain anything from re-applying it on them? Or are they already applied well?

My 2.66Ghz Duo-cores, even during the occasional heavy load (video encoding, large compiles) run well under their thermal threshold.

What kind of temps are you seeing on your CPUs? Are you running sustained CPU-intensive tasks?

When I changed my duals to quads, I noticed that the thermal compound I removed seemed to have been pre-applied to the bottom of the heat-sinks by machine. It was of a good thickness and appeared to be the same compound as I use, Akasa 5022.
