External camera for MBP

Hi there, I have a Canon Ixus 950IS and I was wondering if it was possible to use the camera as a capture device. Basically the iSight on my MBP works, but the image quality is not high enough and I don't want to fork out cash for a capture card and a surveillance camera. So i was wondering if it was possible with some software or something like that.
