Dear forum members,

First off, nice April's Fools day theme, with everything in black and white. I love it. Reminiscent of days gone by.

I have a kind of a simple question which I am almost ashamed to ask, but I have searched for the answer via Google and on this forum, but to no avail.

A minor background detail: I am using Mozy and backing up 9GB of data (80,000 files) for the first time. It went slowly at around 20KB/s and about 5 days later, I have only 1GB left, but still 30,000 files! Due to the way stupid Mozy is designed, it transfers only one file at a time, as opposed to a data block. So the smaller the file, the greater the percentage of overhead, and the greater the interruptions to a stable transfer. So much so that I am transferring at 2KB/s! Suddenly, 20 hours left has turned into 10 days left! I noticed that Mozy is uploading these tiny files named "nnnnn.emlx..." where nnnnn are 5-digit numbers and "..." is where Mozy truncates the name, and I am unsure what it is.

The problem: Since I have no idea what these files are, I decided to look up which folder they belong to and whether I can simple skip these tiny files that seem to serve little purpose. How do I do that? I tried to enter "*.emlx" in both Finder's search and Spotlight, but it insists no items are found. That's not possible because I see them being uploaded.

Conclusion: So the question is, how do I find a filename in Leopard, where I only have the middle of the file name, in this case "*.emlx*"?

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

the files you're talking about are single Mail messages. The are located in <your home folder>/Library/Mail/<any account name>/INBOX/Messages.

Since Spotlight is not indexing the Library folder, you can't find them.

For a search outside of Spotlight I recommend Easyfind, a great tool. It can even search inside packages.

Hope this answers your questions.

Hi MacKindergarten!

Thanks for your reply. I am OK with Spotlight not finding system files, but shouldn't Finder be able to find everything? Is there a way to find files like XP's File Find?

Thanks for the recommendation of Easy Find. Is there a native application like it in Mac OS?

Well, that's the thing. The search in Finder is basically the same as in Spotlight. It uses the same index of the file system.

Thanks for the recommendation of Easy Find. Is there a native application like it in Mac OS?

I'm not sure, what you mean. Easy Find is a Universal Binary. Do you mean, something built-into Mac OS X?
