Looking for Batch MP3 (or WAV) Re-tagger

Hi,

I'd like to migrate a moderate size (~5000 songs / 500 albums) library from media player to iTunes.

After reading the iTunes help, I see how to go into the folder of a particular artist and album, add the .wav files to iTunes, and change the iTunes entry's title (which prepends a track number in front of the song title). However, this requires manual work on each song -- and I also have to manually add the artist, album name, and album cover!

Hopefully there is a more automated way to remove some of these manual steps. Can anybody help!?

Do you really have your music stored as .wav's? Don't you mean .wma's?

In which case I'd re-rip the music from source as otherwise iTunes will have to convert them, and they'll sound awful.
 
They are indeed .wav files.

(BTW, moving to Apple lossless will save me considerable disk space -- it looks like it will use only half the disk space.)

The problem with re-ripping them is that they are from vinyl and took considerable effort to get to this point (free from pops and so forth).
 
OK if they are .WAV's you won't need to re-rip them ;). What you are looking for is an MP3 re-tagger as Windows Media Player has messed them up. This should be fairly straightforward if the files are in sensible artist/album folders as they seem to be.

Though I personally don't know of any decent ones off hand but they definitely exist.

It might be worth changing your thread title in Edit>Advanced>Thread Title to reflect that you are simply looking for an batch MP3 (or WAV) re-tagger.

By the way what OS are you using? Windows? OS X? and which version XP? Vista? 10.4 (Tiger)? 10.5 (Leopard)?

Thanks Eraserhead -- that's very helpful. I'm running MacOS 10.4. The files were processed on an old HP running Vista.
 
Are you looking to turn your wma's to mp3? If so, you do what you are looking to do, but you will need to do it on the windows side. I haven't found a good program to do what I do:

EAC wma>mp3 It can look up the initial tag info for you.
Tag & Rename to update any files that are missing and convert your tags to ver 1 and 3 on the fly
mp3gain for batching the entire collection when you are done.

I haven't found a mac application that can do this. If you do a search, I have asked and tried different applications. Sorry iTunes didn't do it for me. I even tried running some of the windows apps under "wine" and I kept getting crashs. I now just run them under vmware and put them in a folder to bring over to the Mac side.

If you are going to go from wma to aac or m4v. That I don't know how to do sorry.
 
Hi,

I use the following scripts (mostly from from dougscripts.com) for iTunes

1) Filenames to Song Names
2) Albumize Selection
3) Remove n Characters From Front or Back
4) Proper English Title Capitalization

Hope these are helpful to you. If not, check out dougscripts.com They have a script for almost everything.

I use MediaRage to tag MP3s and it can handle .wav .flac and bundles of others as well.
 
dc0511, Thanks -- I'll give MediaRage a try.

It will be a few days before I get the chance to spend some time with this, but it looks like MediaRage will be a big help.
 
MediaRage is an excellent tool, but I'd suggest converting to Apple Lossless with a tool like Max first. It'll save space and ALAC's M4A container allows for more tagging than WAVs (the tagging of which is actually kind of a hack).
 
killmoms, I'm not familiar with Max and I'm discovering that "max mp3 wav" doesn't really produce good results from Google. What company produces Max?

Does Max allow you to generate the tags for a collection of Artist folders with Album folders nested within them? I was planning on using iTunes to do the WAV to Apple Lossless conversion, but I suppose it doesn't really matter.

Max doesn't do any tag generation of its own, it's strictly a converter. It can be found here.

As for generating tags from folders and filenames and such, you can actually use Media Rage to do that, though its regex engine can be a bit complicated to grok.
 
after re-reading your original post this may not be what you want but have you tried... just selecting all of the songs you want in itunes click get info, itll ask you if you want to get info for multiple listings, click yes, then just type the info you want..itll change all of the selected songs, simple
 
squeeks, GetInfo brings up a dialog box with various fields describing the album, but they are all blank (including album, artist, and so on).
