iPod ipod soaked, charges now, BUT...useless (HELP PLZ)..

My son "washed" (water only) my ipod 30gb fifth gen. It's completely dried now and will fully charge and turn on. It will also sync with itunes when connected to the computer. My problem is the click wheel doesn't work. I have no way of listening to the music on it. Does anyone happen to know what the problem is and if it is fixable? If so, how? I know NOTHING about electronics, but I have opened up the ipod and know what it looks like. Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated!

Is it still under warranty? Take it to a genius bar and see if they can fix it.

No, it's far from warranty (and I/son broke it anyway). And I didn't want to have to take it to the genius bar. I bought it spring 2006 when the video 1st came out, for 289 + tax. I figure I can get more than double the gig for less money than I spent the 1st time, on a new 6g. I wouldn't want to suck a large sum of money into a repair. So I was hoping I could fix it myself, if I knew what to do. Something that could buy myself a bit more time until I can afford a new one. Plus the genius bar is like, 1 1/2 hrs. away. Thanks though!
 
Did you take it apart to dry it? It might be that the wheel is still wet, even if the water didn't penetrate all the way down to the motherboard and hard drive. The 5G iPods are a bit tricky to take apart, but not as bad as say, an iBook. If the wheel is totally fried, there's also a lot of places online that will sell you just the replacement part. And, lots of take-apart guides online as well...

The 5th gen iPod is pretty easy to take apart. There are tons of parts on eBay, and iFixit has some great guides. Shouldn't be a tough/expensive fix if it's just the wheel that's broken.
 
I just put my 2g red nano through the washing machine myself.... I was so distraught I bought myself a shiny new iPod Touch with my savings no less... A week later I thought on the off chance I'd plug the now dry nano... half expecting it to blow up.. and guess what... it charged and its working perfectly!

Resilient little buggers these iPods! :rolleyes:

Yes, I took it apart and let it sit for a week. I really appreciate all of your feedback and advice! Unfortunately, iPod is worse off now. When I plug it in I get sad iPod. Looks like 6g it is for me! It's nice to know people are there willing to help. Thank you very much!!
 
I had this very exact problem, but with an iPod nano.

I had FastMac replace my battery (didn't want to mess something up):

The iPod is as good as new, and even holds a longer charge.
