I've already searched over the forums and Google many times resulting in "Reset the SMC" which I have done many times. It resolves the problem for about a week and then BAM, the laptop shuts down while it's on battery and has about 2-3 hours of life left. This is my mothers macbook and we have taken it to the Genius bar when it first started happening and that's how I found out about the SMC reset.

My question here is, do you guys think it's actually a battery problem or the logic board itself? We're setting up another appointment for the Genius Bar this weekend and letting them know that it's a re-occurring problem. She didn't buy applecare but the laptop is only 3 months old and should still be covered. How is apple with replacing batteries? And if it comes down to it, would they replace the machine itself?

Just looking for people with past experience. Thanks.

Sorry for the bump after a couple of days...but I know exactly what you're talking about, had the same problem, shutting down while it says i have hours of battery left and all.

I took my macbook to the genius bar for a completely different reason and while there mentioned it to the genius. He said that because it had more than 300 charges they couldn't do anything about it since I don't have apple care. But i simply explained to him that part of the reason it has so many charges is because the battery barely lasts so I have to charge it a lot and also it started happening before my year warranty was up. So he was nice enough to replace my battery for free.

Now my battery lasts around 4 hours with the new one so I think it's definitely a battery issue.

Hope that helped!

Doesn't sound like the MB or the Logic Board needs replacing, more like the battery as the previous poster ^ had mentioned. Take it in to the Apple Store as soon as possible. Sounds like the battery isn't going to get better through constant charging in its present state. Is it within your 1 year warranty, but what is keeping you from buying AppleCare within the 12 month warranty or is that something you are considering in the near future?
