Eject, Unmount. Difference is...?

My wife meant to eject her ipod and accidentally right clicked my backup drive and clicked eject. Beyond unplugging the drive is there a way to re-mount the drive? I looked under disk utility but the drive didn't show up there as it was ejected. I noticed in disk utility that there is an eject and an unmount option, and I realized, I didn't know there was a difference. Is there? Thanks for any replies
 
Eject will do just that, allow a cd rom to be removed from the tray or unlink a removable device e.g. a USB key.

A dismount or unmount or umount will remove the block device pointer to the file system/volume, etc. e.g. /cdrom can be unmounted so the folder /cdrom no longer links to the device, and then ejected where the tray is triggered to extend out (or spit out the cd rom in a trayless slot loader)
