i am paranoid and i dont want to take the protective cover off that came with the ipod.

i dont want ANY scratches at all..

i have a 5.5g ipod
i never used a single protective accessory
it has some scratches, but very tiny and very hard to notice
i am not bugged by them at alli am bugged by the fact that people put so much money on improving technologies to make a product slimmer by 1 mm or so, just so they can "protect" it with a protective cover - or whatever it's called - that is 3mm thick

OP, I think you should invest in an invisible shield, and not take any chances on getting it scratched, since this is important to you. Scratch resistant means it won't scratch easily, but it can still be scratched. Google scratched iPod screens, and you'll get a variety of scratched screens and preventative measures. I think the newer generations of iPod are much better about screen scratches. That said I can not praise the invisible shield products enough. I have one on my 5g iPod and it's virtually invisible and has survived my usage. I also have one on my wife's 3g nano and it has improved the grip significantly. I would imagine the grip improvement would carry over to the slippery touch as well ( the first thing my wife did with my touch was drop it ).
 
Question: If something is strong/hard/etc. enough to actually scratch the scratch-resistant screen, isn't it extremely likely that it'll scratch right through any plastic protector?

It seems to me that the biggest benefit of the screen protectors has more to do with fingerprints than it does scratch protection...
 
Hardness

It all has to do with hardness, like you probably learned in grade school. Glass is harder than (most) metals so the metal won't scratch it, however diamond is much harder than glass and will scratch it easily. There are lots of other things that are hard enough to scratch glass, like ceramics, but if you don't have a lot of that kind of stuff around I wouldn't worry about it. If you have a tungsten carbide wedding ring I would recommend some protection. I use my touch without a screen protector and I worry way more about cracking the screen than I do about scratching it (glass is brittle). I do use a cozip case that just covers the back though because it scratches very easily and the finger prints drive me crazy.

The *touch* screens (iPhone and iPod Touch) are made of tempered glass... so the answer is different for them than for other iPods. They're fairly scratch proof -- but the casing metal is not necessarily all so scratch proof. So if you carry it nude, it'll get scratched eventually. But if you want to truly own an iPod for some time and have no scratches whatsoever, your only real option is to never unseal the box, and put the whole box in your closet for the next three years...
 
hehe yeah i bought the clear griffin case when i got my ipod and haven't taken it out but to look at it and the chrome back is scratched. wtf.

how does it get scratched up inside of the case? grrr..

i dont want the screen scratched up though so i'm leaving the protective cover on the problem is that the protective cover is getting scratched up and that is really annoying so im thinking about looking into a thinner case for my ipod and one of those invisible shields.. my case makes my ipod twice as thick.

anyone recommend any cool very slim cases that go all the way around? i'd even use an iphone case for it with the camera cutout and stuff if it was cool.

The glass is extremely scratch proof. You don't need a cover on it.

that video doesn't really prove anything to me.. if you drag your keys across it then i wouldn't think it would scratch no glass would scratch dragging your keys across it like that.. plastic might.. but if you actually grind keys into it or the little twisted can tab i'm sure it would scratch which is the scratches that i'm worried about..

never said that the plastic cover is more powerful but if there are going to be scratches on it, i'd rather them be on the plastic cover than on the screen.

i left it on my old nano for over two years before i sold it to get my touch so it's not really a big deal for me.

maybe i'll take it off.. dunno yet. i dont mind the cover, but being naked would be nice but the thought of it scratching pains me deep inside.

I took my screen protector off for literally 3 hours and put it in my backpack in my (as far as I know) motionless locker. When I took it out, it was scratched. So I suggest keeping it on ;)
 
You guys don't know how to take care of your things then. If you don't want scratches, don't put it near really sharp objects. Putting it in an empty pocket will not harm it, keeping it away from really heavy sharp things won't harm it as well. As far as I know, the glass does NOT scratch very easily... you have to try pretty freakin' hard to scratch the thing. Why don't you go out to walmart and buy the ExtremeMac protective film and stop worrying but, the protective film scratches and that makes the screen look scratched... and if you're worried about scratches, then why would you want a piece of film that scratches EASILY on top of a piece of glass that probably won't get scratched at all (as long as you take care of it).

I've had my iPod touch since it shipped and I have no scratches on my screen.... none... zero... it's perfect as the day I got it.

The only place that has scratched on mine is the bottom near the dock connector from where I put it in and out of the dock to sync and charge. Other than that there is not a scratch on the thing.
 
Yeah, I got an invisible shield on mine. You can't even notice it, and it keeps it from getting scratched at all.
 
Not to throw a fly into the ointment here, but the shield itself will scratch. Of course, it's a heck of a lot cheaper ( if you call $15 cheap ) and easier to replace.
 
bestskinsever.com has the same product as invisible shield for much cheaper, like $8 for full body protection for the touch.
 
The Invisible Shield and BestSkinsEver don't permanently scratch like the cheap, flimsy films. They're made of a soft plastic material that will return to normal after being damaged. Unless you use a scalpel and cut all the way through it, of course.
 
Bought my Invisible Shield because I had heard about how durable the front was, but everyone and their mother knows about what a scratch magnet the back of all iPods are.

So I applied it (it was a long process) and now my iPod looks fantastic, and I can take keys to the back of it and not damage it at all.
 
As everyone else has been saying - InvisibleSHIELD or Bodyguardz both work brilliantly. Its 25 dollars well spent - it looks perfect, feels safe, and you can breathe easy. You won't regret it.
