So I've tried Mac The Ripper and VisualHub and both have been unsucessful. MTR copied the files but I couldn't play them (they were unrecognized by the Mac finder). VisualHub gave me a codec error when it tried to copy the .ifo file from the disc.

I am a Mac newbie and would really appreciate any help in setting up a good DVD ripping program. I also need a a good mpg conversion program and so far I am thinking of investing in VisualHub (unless someone knows of a better one).

When you rip using MacTheRipper, it should create a folder called VIDEO_TS (which contains a bunch of files).

This can be played using either DVD Player.app or VLC. In either app, tell the app to open the VIDEO_TS folder, not the files within it.

If you want to convert this to a single file playable in quicktime/itunes/etc. you can convert it using Handbrake.

OK, I'm going to try again with MTR. I just tried to convert a DVD straight to MP4 in Handbrake but twice it quit out and gave an error.

What is the title of the movie? Or if you aren't supposed to be ripping this particular movie...what does it ryhme with? Ex. Shmansformers.

Some newer formated DVDs dont work with mac the ripper 2.6 and you might need to give a "gift" at the rip different forums to get the updated version.

Also try ripping the title with MTR and then pointing the DVD player app at the video ts folder.

Handbrake doesn't decrypt the copy protection in DVDs (at least I'm pretty sure it doesn't), so it can only go straight from a DVD if it's a non-encrypted disk (like a family DVD or something). Otherwise, you need a program like MacTheRipper to get the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive. Then Handbrake should convert it fine.

Cool. I'll try that.

Yes! That works. Thanks.
