... that I try to open an exported Keynote '08 document.

Here's what happens: I create a Keynote '08 document and export it as Power Point. If I either double-click or try to open from within PPT '08, I get a crash stating that PPT has encountered an error and needs to quit. This happens EVERY time with EVERY single exported presentation. Oddly, it never happened in PPT '04.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I finally figured it out (and thought I'd update this for any future users with this issue).

It turns out that Keynote 4 documents with presenter notes are causing the issue. If I export a Keynote with notes to PPT and try to open it - it crashes every single time. However, if I delete all the notes and then export, PowerPoint opens it up no problem.

Annoying, but at least there is a workaround...

I have the same problem of an exported Keynote -> PPT

Ok, I have the latest version of Keynote (4.0.3) and the latest version of Powerpoint (Office 2008, PPT Version 12.0.1). When I export a complex Keynote file (including notes) into PPT format. The latest version of PowerPoint (Office 2008) displays the following error message:
-----------------
PowerPoint encountered an error and needs
to quit.
To save a copy of the current prsentation, on the File menu, click Save As and give the document a new name.
Save any other open presentations, and then quit and reopen PowerPoint.
-----------------

However it crashes Powerpoint and nothing can be done.

Removing the notes, then exporting to PPT format does work, but I would say that this is a Keynote export engine bug !

I'm not sure it is a Keynote issue. I never got this error using the same files exported to PPT '04 - just PPT '08.

That said SOMEONE needs to fix this.

Same exact problem. Thanks for posting. Apple needs to get this fixed.

Note: This is a new problem. I used to export from Keynote 2008 to ppt without any issues.

Buggy

Same error. It will export it correctly, as far as I can tell. Powerpoint crashes the instant I try to open the file.

Sounds like a bug.

Powerpoint 2008 crashes

Program crashes without warning when quicktime or other movies are played in the object boxes. I've reformatted movies to AVI,cinepak and .mov's. Nothing works.
The program is a fraud and a complete waste of my time. It crashes randomly and is therefore worthless for presentations.

Is there a reliable fix ?
THanks
Deb

Powerpoint 2008 Crashes no matter what. I thought it might be because I added some dictation. I have quicktime movies in the slides too. My file is big. 386 MB. So I thought it was the file size. So I went to the Microsoft website and downloaded a couple of upgrades and installed them. (12.1) No luck. I'm going to try to call them tomorrow.

Powerpoint for mac Sucks

Powerpoint crashes more if quicktimemovies are put into it. These will play, but cause it to crash more. Movies have to be .avi format and have to have the proper .avi name also.
Mac doesn't require this so that is one of the problems. Never theless they should not have released the program since it is obviously useless. Imagine speaking in front of a large group and having the program crash over and over. I am going to ask for my money back as program is useless on the Mac.

My Powerpoint 2008 doesn't crash, even with gobs of Quicktime movies. But when I go to print it out, forget it. Crash, crash, crash. And it really didn't like me dictating into the slides. Let me know what you find out. I can't recall having this problem with Office 2004 but I can't remember yesterday well either.

Aloha

Keynote '08 was the culprit ....

I'm going to put the blame on this one squarely on Keynote (iWork 08). An associate and I created dozens of Keynotes for a major presentation because we both preferred to work with Macs. Of course we had to provide copies of our presentations to the class and that required they be in Power Point format.

We found that every instance (well over 50) of exporting from Keynote to a Power Point caused a crash in Power Point 2008 (Mac). The same exported file would open in Power Point 2007 (Win), but yielded nothing. It didn't crash 2007, but it didn't provide a viewable file either. In every instance, oddly enough, we could open the file in Power Point 2003. Once we opened it in 2003 and saved it using 2003, 2007 or 2008 could open it just fine. The same held true with or without presenter notes. It wasn't an elegant solution, but it worked without fail.

I put on a copy of Keynote '09 (iWork '09) yesterday and every export to Power Point works fine on 2008 and 2007 versions of Power Point. I am left to conclude that the problem was with the rendering engine in Keynote '08.

That's good to know; meaning, iLife 09 Keynote behaved well with Powerpoint. My problem is that I cannot export my Powerpoint 2008 into a movie without it crashing.

Also, do you export your Keynote presentations into Quicktime for movies? I have a lot of movies (Quicktime format) within my Powerpoint presentations and have such problems with Powerpoint 08. 07 was less tempermental.

I started to work with Keynote but the voice over option is all or nothing. I couldn't dictate for each slide. I'm all Mac.

Keynote 09 export behavesbadly on occasion

After countless (well ~50 or so) successful exports from Keynote '09 to Powerpoint 2008 I experienced a crash today. Exported file could not be opened by Powerpoint. I eventually traced that to an image with an empty 'File info' field in the Metrics tab of the Inspector.

Copying, pasting to preview, saving (e.g. as a PNG file) and re-inserting solved the problem.

Yay.

Keynote '09 to Mac Powerpoint 2011 (& Powerpoint 2010)

Since this appears to be the collection of Keynote -> Powerpoint problem solving solutions I thought I'd contribute. Trying to open ppt files exported from Keynote '09 caused both Mac Powerpoint 2011 & Windows Powerpoint 2010 to complain the "Powerpoint found a problem with content in the file..." and you are given the option to then attempt to Repair the file. Repairing on occasion will work & the slide with the problem will be blank but most of the time clicking on Repair results in another error "Power cannot open ... because part of the file is missing".

The cause, or one of the causes, of this problem appears to be having any grouped objects in the Keynote presentation. The solution is to go through, Select All & Ungroup everything for every slide, including all Master Slides. The other item to keep an eye on is that Keynote's default behavior for many Powerpoint-unsupported features is to Group things prior to export (picture frames, some lines) which will, as you might expect, create fresh grouped items which will then create a ppt file that cannot be opened.

Note that as far as I can tell the original bug mentioned in this thread (Keynote Presenter Notes causing Powerpoint crashes) appears to be fixed in the above combination of Keynote/Powerpoint.

I hope this helps someone,

Chris

Typical non-compatibility of iWork

As much as I love Apple products for doing my work, I've learned one thing the hard way: if you need to exchange files with the MS Office world, you'd better create the documents in MS Office on your Mac from the get-go. Even if you think the iWork tools are better, as I do in a lot of ways, the supposedly compatible exports to .docx, and .ppt just aren't. And they're incompatible in stupid ways like the one reported here... where Keynote groups objects before exporting, making the exported file unusable by Powerpoint without repair. In my case, embedded movies get exported but the actions that play them are forgotten. A word to the wise...

Worked like a charm. Thanks very much for this solution to an infuriating issue with Keynote.

Powerpoint 2011

Hi all,

MS office is killing me and I'd appreciate any pointers and comments
Here's the situation:

1. Keynote file (multi-revised over the years) exported to powerpoint file XYZ in New-MBP
2. New-MBP opens XYZ and gets "found a problem with content in..."
3. Click on "repair", open up XYZ, and get bunch of blank pages

4. Same XYZ file copied to Old-MBP(freshly installed, now my home media server, not many apps installed).
5. Same version of Office 2011 installed in Old-MBP, opened the file just fine!
(so the problem is not NewMBP Keynote)

6. Created a test account in New-MBP
7. Attempted to open XYZ with Powerpoint
8. Same "found a problem with content in..."
9. Click on "repair", open up XYZ, and get bunch of blank pages
(so the problem is not user/privileges, but the NewMBP system-wide issue?)

10. In New MBP, created a brand new Keynote file, did some light work
11. Exported new keynote file to powerpoint file RRR
12. In New-MBP, RRR opened under Powerpoint 2011 just fine!
(so the problem might be the original multi-modified Keynote file?)
(But its powerpoint file XYZ opened in Old-MBP just fine!)

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2011, with SP1, still cannot open XYZ properly.
I've copied all Office 2011 files from Old-MBP to New MBP, still cannot open XYZ properly.
I"ve googled the problem and tried anything I could find, still cannot open XYZ properly. (deleting presenter notes... etc)

My current conclusion: some kind of software system conflicts in the New-MBP.

Anyone with any ideas?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Will

Crap, I almost got burned by this Keynote export bug. I am unable to open ppt files created by Keynote by either 08 or 11 Power points on the same computer running 10.6. Oddly, powerpoint opens the same files no problem on a Windows machine or a Mac running 10.4.

Even though it would take me some adjustment, I am tempted to switch back to PowerPoint for future presentations: this way I am more likely to be ok if I need to open a presentation on another computer.

after a bunch of tweaks, uninstall and reinstall,
i found that Office 2011 14.0 works fine with keynote exported ppt files.
not sure exactly how or why, maybe something else i did, maybe i got lucky,
but for now, i'm not gonna touch anything....

just glad that it works.

oh yeah, i did install office under "safe mode".
try that after you uninstall it completely first.

This worked for me

Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best. This worked for me.

Go to Powerpoint and under Powerpoint/Preferences/Save change it from slideshow presentation to movie. Then to a save as movie and it works. At least it did for me.

BTW, I'm on Mac OS X platform and I'm running an ancient Powerpoint.
