Ok I have done a search and it seems no newer threads of this topic are around anymore. I had a lacie and all of my family uses lacie. My father tried a western digital once but it came doa. Not exactly a great impression. I am comparing two models. Please vote which if you were me you'd get. Both have the same connections for speeds (usb 2.0/400/800 firewire)

I'm not sure if the 1TB version does it but the WD drive I have now goes into a "sleep" status after a few minutes, not a problem if you are constantly using it but it can take it a few seconds to respond when you do want to use it, my Lacie on the other hand doesn't do this. I realize that all drives will do this but the WD drive lag is quite noticeable.
well as far as media goes. i have a lacie 500gb hd for over 2 1/2 years. NOT 1 KB of data ever lost unless i deleted it. the aluminum case is soliddd much tougher then a mbp case.
i use acid pro and wen im mixing all my audio is selected and running through the hd there isnt any lag or latency issues. im using usb 2.0.
i also use rane serato and my mbp along with it and wen im djing my music streams out of the hd to my mbp from my mbp to the external card controller from there to the discs on dj set. No lag what so ever.
all i have to say the lacie hds are better built i have no clue what drive is inside the external or what brand they use but it is reliable!.
my cuz bought a 1tb and the power supply failed and they replaced it for free he didnt lose any data either.
drive doesnt go to sleep by it self. there is a power button right on the front and wen the computer turns on as long the hd is connected to a usb port it will turn on and off with your computer.
also built in fan for cooling.

I have a 160 GB LaCie mini, and it has never failed me once.
One of my friends bought a WD MyBook a few months ago, and it's already showing signs of dying. Definitely go with LaCie

ur at ur own risk basically. if the drive croakz out 1 day after it all ur fault its gonna hurt much more vs if it was lacies fault or wd fault.

satifaction from making your own drive is gonna be amazing if it lasts.
all in all buying a new lacie or wd or making your own there all risk in it.
your basically trusting some hardware to hold your data for somepeople i dont know about you it takes along time to collect some this stuff.
i rather my computer die them my harddrive honestly.
but look at prices because thats always a factor.
Regardless of the brands, I'd pick the single drive over the RAID 0 drives. With the former you have a single point of catastrophic failure, but with the latter you have three (two drives and controller). I just think RAID 0 is a really bad idea if you care about your data.
With that said, I've been using the WD 1TB Studio as my daily Time Machine backup drive since November with no problems.

I think that there is a firmware update for that drive. Check out the WD website for it.
I am using a 320 gb WD My Book Home w/ firewire and usb. I've had no issues so far.
I ended up buying two samsung 750gb drives (5 year warranty) and a galaxy raid enclosure in which I can set it to mirror each disk so if one goes down the other is the same and has backed up the data from the back up. Saved $70 vs buying the lacie and have a 5 year warranty. Not to mention 500gb more. I'm satisfied.

I have 4 500Gb WD MyBooks and I think they are fantastic, and so far never had a failure. On the flipside I've lost a lot of data on the Lacies.
The inability to turn off the powerdown after 10mins on the MyBooks is a bit of a pain but on the other hand, its there to save power when they're idle, so I have to admit from a business perspective it saves money when they're all switched on all day.

Please don't spout nonsense. Hard drives with no warranties? Where are you sourcing them from - the city dumpster?
This is the deal with LaCie. Your hard drive is fine, but the ports go. Happened to me. Happens to a lot of LaCie owners. You send the drive back, LaCie will wipe the drive. Your precious data is dunzo. You salvage the drive, you lose all warranty claims. Either way you are screwed.
WD Mybooks are sealed units, unless you get the noisier two-drive versions. For what happens if they break down, see LaCie. Maybe you can negotiate a hard drive salvage, if the disk is ok. I have not had to try yet.
You want to play safe? Build your own. You get a separate warranty on the case and the internal drive. No need to send your drive in if the case dies on you and your data is safe in any case. If your drive dies, then it sucks but you are no worse off than if you had bought your HD from LaCie or WD.
