Hi, guys! I want to buy a 16GB iPhone asap in the area of Mount Prospect. I went to some of the apple store places but they told me that they are out of stock. Then AT&T said that they have it, but i can have it ONLY with a 2-year contract. But as you probably can tell (by reading my english :D), I don't want to sign any contracts right now.

So my questions are:

1) Am I obligated in some way to sign the contract at AT&T store when buying a 16GB iPhone from them?
2) Please, locals, tell me if you know some place in the area where they aren't out of stock for the 16 giger.

I think you can just say it is a gift or that you wanna activate it in iTunes to buy it. And then, you haven't signed any contract.

The "contract" is set up through iTunes. Just tell them, you're going to port your number over and do it all through iTunes. They should sell it to you.

Thanks to both of you! I have some more questions for you:

Actually, a friend of mine is buying 2 iPhones and she got concerned because they wanted her name when she went to pay for them. I don't want to cause her any trouble with her visa and so on because of this iPhone purchase.

If she buys two now and none of them get activated, will there be a problem for her to buy a third iPhone for herself later this year?

Is the situation in Apple store any different than in AT&T and is there a point to wait and buy the iPhones from :apple:store

I think its only recently they started this nonsense of making sure you sign a contract,,, just tell them you will do it on iTunes when you get home... Since iPhones are going short they have to make sure that few get Jailbroken.

no there should be no problems with that, They will always take your money, they won't turn it away. Also they don't associate activation with the credit card you used to purchase the hardware. (At least AT&T didn't for me)

no one "makes sure you sign a contract"

you leave an apple store with the phone and no contract always.

Cant you order them off the online Apple Store?

I don't have so much time - 5-7 business days... She'll try again at AT&T and lets hope that everything goes smoothly...If not, I'll get the 3G version in July myself.
