I'm trying to rip audio from CD into MP3 form using iTunes but I can't find any helpful instructions in the 'Help' menu. Can anyone tell me what to do beyond sticking in a CD, clicking the checkbox and hitting 'import'? ie. Where does the file go? What filetype is it? How do I convert to mp3? Thanks in advance.

All of your questions can be answered by heading into the preference area...
On a Mac all you do is click the iTunes tab at the top and scroll on into Preferences, the Advanced.
The first tab in Advanced is the location of your music folder, the second is file type for importing.
On Windows it is in one of the tabs I just don't recall which one.
As a default it saves music to your music folder on a Mac (open up Finder and there is a Music folder)
I also believe that it automatically uses the AAC codec for file conversion, if you want it to use the MP3 codec just select that from the drop down menu.

iTunes Menu>Preferences>Advanced on the Mac
or
Edit>Preferences>Advanced on Windows.
