Ok, right now I have both on my computer but I'd like to condense it to one because they each have a ~2GB library.

My question is this: what are the strengths and weaknesses of both and why would I want to use Aperture over iPhoto, or the other way around?

Right now I only have a point and shoot Samsung camera (a NV10) but I think I'm going to be getting a Canon Xt soon. It will all be "hobby" photography, not professional work.

After using both my impression so far is that Aperture is made more for professionals (icon is a SLR lens), while iPhoto is more for "fun" (a point a shoot in the icon). I like that everything in Aperture has an easy keyboard shortcuts, and I like full screen mode better than iPhoto's. But navigation in iPhoto seems much easier and as a program it just feels less cluttered.

EDIT: Oh, and one more question. When I eventually uninstall one it's safe to delete it's library file, right?

Advice?

With the new features in Aperture 2.0, Aperture is able to do more or less everything iPhoto can do. iPhoto's enough for many users, but, if you already have Aperture, there's really no reason to use iPhoto instead of it.

Absolutely!

It all depends on what you want to do... There's nothing wrong with a P&S camera - getting a DSLR will not necessarily guarantee you better photos!

How many images do you have - 100's - 1000's? How much PP work do you do on them? If you are only in the 100's and don't do much PP, iPhoto could be all you require. However, if you have a large number of photos that need organising and need a certain amount of PP, then Aperture is ideal because, as has already been said, it enables you to adjust most things and will enable you to get yourself organised!

There is no logical reason for using both applications! I just wonder why you went for Aperture in the first place..
