I want to try video (Canon HV-30 ?)

I recently purchased my first Mac a month ago and really want to start using more of its features.

The first thing I thought about was Video (family stuff, website, and possibly try my luck at making short movies).

I was researching HD camcorders and came across the Canon HV-30. Look like a real nice product and I found it for $808.

Anyone else use this or recommend a Video Camera for a future George Lucas :).

Lots of people recommend the predecessor to the HV30, which is the Canon HV20. The HV20 can be found for a better price (around $650) and has most of the features that the HV30 has ... meaning the HV30 wasn't that huge of a jump. If you plan on doing lots of videos for the web, then the 30p feature on the HV30 might be useful. In order to conserve bandwidth, lots of video on the Internet is converted to 15 fps. Much easier to convert 30p to 15p than it is to conver 24p.

That was one of the bigger features of the HV30. Otherwise, I think the HV30 is probably just as good as the HV20. Also, it's black, so that looks nicer (my opinion).

Yes, The hv-30 or 20 are both great cameras. I use the hv20. I started out just wanting it to film my daughter. I have since become more comfortable with some of the controls and for a sub $700 camera with full HD capability it doesn't get any better than the hv20.

Check out hv20.com and see what one of these can do in the hands of some great cinematographers. It will make you go buy one right now. ;)

That site is great. Thx for the tip. I may pick up the camera this week. Do you think its a bad idea though to go with a tape based media compared with the flash card based cameras? I read that the tape has some advantages over the flash cards.

If you browse around HV20.com, the user there "Ten Ounce" has the HV30 in stock for $849 w/ Free Shipping if something goes wrong w/ your abes purchase...

Hey if you like making videos then you should try checking out this online company at mindbites.com. You can make money for making instructional videos. So check it out! its a great way to make money for a hobby that you love doing.
 
Sanyo Xacti 700.

It does 720p HD. Audio is fantastic. It uses SD cards. No clunky tapes or breakable hdds. 2 and change hrs HD on an 8G SD card. Comes with a dock, remote, the works. Fits in the palm of your hand. It's nice.
