I've been having a recent problem with my powerbook G4 15" (1.67 proc, 1 gig ram, running OS X 10.5.2):
When CPU and Video Card are stressed for a few minutes (as happens when playing World of Warcraft, for example, or using SystemLoad to load CPU and running xbench's graphics tests), the usb ports become useless. From that point on, it is only a matter of time until the trackpad also stops working, and the system locks up. A hard restart is the only thing that will release the computer, and then I have to let it sit for 20 minutes or so before it will start up again.
I thought maybe it was a heat issue, but iStat only shows a max temp of 51C, which doesn't seem like enough to cause this extreme of an issue.
I have repaired permissions and repaired the disk (using the leopard install disc). It doesn't seem to have helped.
Originally, I thought this to be a World of Warcraft issue, since it seemed to have coincided with a recent patch. After consulting with their tech support, I tried to emulate the strain WoW causes on the system, and the same issue occurred. So it seems something wrong with my system.
I thought I'd check here before making an appointment at the apple store (since my applecare is long since expired). Please assist!
Thanks,
-->dv.
