Time Machine backup to USB HD connected to Time Capsule

Time Machine won't let me backup to my WD My Book which is connected to my time capsule. It will only backup to the internal HD of time capsule. Which would be ok if I could set the Max size for backupfiles, but Time Machine will not let me do that either. Any suggestions?
