I've only had my Macbook four or five months and I've just noticed that the thin strip of plastic around the endge of the keyboard has suddenly started to come away.

I've actually been really careful with my machine, so I'm really disappointed to see this.

Is this a trait of Macbooks? Is there anything I can do to get this fixed?

You will probably be able to take it to the Apple store and they will fix it. This happened not too long ago and Apple fixed it.

My MacBook was fixed

This is a well known issue, schedule an appointment at your local apple store and within 30 minutes they can replace your MacBook's plastic cover.
I personally believe that if it's out of warranty because it's a known issue they will replace the faulty plastic part.
