as i am in the middle of backing up to time capsule for the first time i have had to leave my new mbp plugged in for a day now is this good for the battery?

You should have your MBP plugged in whenever it is available. When it is plugged in, the battery charges to 100% and then the power from the wall is used to run your notebook. So its not hurting the batter. Also, the battery is only under warranty until you have 250 charge cycles. To find out how many charge cycles you have, either download Istat Pro from apple.com.

oh thats cool thanks for the info , I just thought it might fry the battery or something.

the charger does charge once the battery reaches 100%. It just trickle charges.
