It's as simple as that. I've attached my external drive to my 17 inch macbook Pro, on the wirewire 400 port, and it shows up under the profiler as as "Unknown device".
The same drive looks fine on my iMAC
OS version on both machines is 10.5.2.
If I use the USB2.0 port on the drive and connect it to either machine it can be seen by both.

Any ideas?

Looks fine on the iMac w/Firewire? Is the MacBook Pro plugged in? Does the FW drive have it's own power supply? Maybe the FW bus on the MacBook Pro doesn't have enough power to power the device w/o an external power supply, or being plugged in.

Yes it looks fine on the iMac as both a firewire device and a USB device.
Is the MacBook Pro plugged in?.... yes
Does the FW drive have it's own power supply?... yes

Solved.

The techs tell me that of the 400 Macbook Pros bought, 60 of them have the same issue. They sent them back and had them replaced...

Made in China... go figure.
good thing they aren't painted
