About a month ago, i purchased a refurb iPod Touch 8G (using the $100 iPhone "rebate" I received last fall). The biggest difference to the iPhone (besides no phone) is the lack of a built-in speaker. Instead, the Touch has a small transducer which makes the clicks and beeps for alarms--not a big deal as long as I could still use it as an alarm for events.
However, all was not right with my Touch's transducer. On some of the alarm sounds (particularly 'Checkmate' and 'Up Down') , the notes were distorted--particularly the high notes. I checked out my friend's Touch and the sounds played perfectly. On mine, it sounded clipped or like a blown speaker.
I thought I could live with it, but after a few weeks made the trip to the Apple Store for a replacement. The folks there were great and apologetic, and gave me a shiny new (refurb I guess) Touch to replace the problem unit. Got it home and guess what--same issue with the transducer, but even worse. I talked to a few other people I know who have a Touch, and 2 have bad tranducers, and two have good ones. Including my two bad units, that's 2/3 of the sample that have a defective part.
Seems like pretty poor quality control on Apple's part...I'd be interested in hearing from others who are having the same problem to see how widespread this issue is.
