Not only that I can't even play it,Do I need some extra software or something ?
There's anything can be done to transfer my DVD's to my external HD ?

Try VLC to play it - that does most everything, re: transfer, what message does it give you?? It could be that the external HD is not a compatible Mac format. A bit more info is needed if you want help.

Yes - a bit more information please.

Are your "family dvd's" - commercial dvd's or what ?

If they are then they are copy protected - which will stop you copying them to an external or your internal drive.

They are movies I copied from VHS into DVD's , weird thing is doesn't even show on my desktop as regular DVD movie.

Any ideas ?

Thank you

If they don't show on the desktop then they must be some strange format - if you are using a home dvd recorder have you finalised the disks on your recorder - they will play on the recorder if they are not finalised but won't play on a dvd player (or show on your Mac)
